This intersection deserves better (FIFTH AVE + BELLEFONTE) #Pittsburgh

2 min readJan 20, 2025

This has been in mind for so long. The intersection I am referring to is a critical point for many residents of Shadyside, which is mostly off-campus students from CMU and U Pitt (and for the sake of clarity, yes, I meant Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh, maybe some from Chatham and Carlow? I am not sure about those) This is probably why it doesn't deserve attention from the city as it should be, there is a feeling of “you are not yinzer” even though out of 365 days we economically contribute to the city more than they realized (look at what happen during COVID).

This is critical bus stop that even if it is snowing, it is normal to see a queue of people here.

But you might ask now, what do I mean “deserves better”? Currently this is where the bus stop pair for PRT 71B, 71D, 28X Airport link, and CMU Shuttle. It is also, however, a critical node to Walnut Street and anyone living along middle housing strips along Fifth Avenue. Despite all of the ideal conditions for Transit Oreint Development (TOD), no crosswalk or any traffic calming or any bus rider consideration whatsoever is going on here.

Looking at inbound (to downtown direction side) this stop (Fifth Ave + Bellefonte no. 3144) has a lot of bus riders in fact much more than the one at Aiken Ave). PRT (and spill over to CMU Shuttle!) are getting some ridership
